Reading Recovery is part of the Early Years program in Grade 1, and has commenced. A small number of children, although being involved in a good classroom program, may still find reading and writing a confusing task and may need extra assistance. Over the past two weeks, all the children in Grade 1 have been assessed by myself, using the Marie Clay Diagnostic Survey. Selection of children is based on the assessments of Reading and Writing. Children on the reading recovery program work for half an hour daily on a one to one basis with me. The program is similar in context to Classroom Reading and Writing but is individualised and the teacher is constantly responding to the child’s needs. When the child has developed strategies of reading and writing in step with the others in the class, the child moves back into the classroom and another child is selected to commence. The program is highly successful, particularly where children are further supported in the classroom and at home. Reading Recovery Teacher Helen Harrington. |
