Four Years

Social Development
Takes turns in conversation.
Joins in play with other children.
Begins 'dramatic' play, eg. Acting out cooking etc.

Self Help Skills

Spreads soft butter with knife.
Buttons large buttons.
Blows nose when reminded.
Uses toilet independently.

Cognitive Development
Is able to match two similar objects.
Looks at book with adult naming or pointing to familiar objects on request.

Motor Development
Gross Motor

Balances on one foot for 5-10 seconds.
Hops on one foot.  Rides a tricycle.  Uses a slide.  Walks on a line.  Throws ball overhead.  Catches ball bounced to him/her.

Fine Motor

Copies a circle.
Build a tower of 9 small blocks.
Manipulates clay, eg. Rolls balls, snakes.

Language Development

Expression
Asks lots of who, what, why questions.
Uses about 900 words in 4-5 word sentences.
Tells simple story and holds conversation.
Uses "in and on".

Refer to Speech Pathologist

Refer to Occupational Therapist if:

Comprehension
Knows shapes.
Understands time words eg. "yesterday, today, lunchtime, summer".
Follows two stage commands eg. "Get you shoes and come inside"
Begins to put things in groups eg. "clothes, food.
Understands some concepts eg. Opposites - "up and down"
